Ordering Lunch

Boundaries can be tricky, especially when we're setting them with loved ones.

It often feels like we’re walking a tightrope, trying to balance our needs while avoiding conflict. We stumble in predicting how they may react, or how they may feel if we set a boundary.

But here’s something to consider: what if we approached communicating our boundaries the same way we place a lunch order at a restaurant?

I would like to order an authentic, loving relationship please.
I would like to order an authentic, loving relationship please.

Imagine sitting down at a restaurant, and instead of clearly stating what you want, you say, “I’m hungry.”

Now, the waiter might look at you, and sure, they understand that you’re hungry, but they’re probably not going to bring you anything, right?

They’d need more information.

They need to know what you actually want to eat. The waiter has no idea if you want a sandwich, a salad, or something entirely different.

They are left to guess, which, probably won’t end well for either of you.

It’s the same when setting boundaries with loved ones.

When you don’t communicate clearly and specifically, you leave too much room for misunderstanding.

Now imagine walking into that restaurant and when the waiter arrives you clearly state "a cheeseburger, hold the tomatoes, with fries and a side of ranch". There will be no confusion, frustration or resentment created between you and your loved one... er...I mean the waiter.

When practicing communicating your boundaries clearly, imagine your well-thought-out lunch order: you’re specific, you’re direct, and there’s no room for confusion.

It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but just like ordering lunch, once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature.
